Home schooling was the norm before the establishment of the public and private schools; children were taught at home by their parents or in a small community classroom by a local scholar. In current times, getting education at home has become a very popular trend again. In developed countries, home education has become an alternative to formal established education. For instance, a unit study of Ancient Rome might provide lessons in the social structure of ancient Rome, as well as exploring the history of the place, the language and customs, the interaction of other cultures, the food and the religion.This method is adapted to multi-grade level teaching since the central topic may be taken up with a view to the learning level of the student. It is claimed that 45 percent retention is obtained by this method.2. The “school-in-a box” or “all-in-one” method puts together lessons about many subjects in a package containing the material for one-year’s worth of lessons. Obviously this method is ideal for families living in far-flung areas. The lessons are much standardized and formal tests are given to allow the student the chance to earn an accredited certificate of completion.3. Online Schools are also becoming popular today. Middle aged people who want to get back, as it were, to school, often opt to take online schooling. This method of home schooling offers the students a greater variety of courses to study, provides online tests, tutoring and occupational therapy. They have teachers who are specialists in their field of learning and the student gets more flexibility for schedules. This option is favored by disabled people, or elderly students.

In the light of the advancing technology, it will not be surprising if, in the near future, conventional schools will be replaced by online home schooling, or some other small community schooling which uses technology to bring a wealth of educational information to student who are administered by one master teacher. Of all the options for studying at home, online home schooling offers the greatest adjust ability in terms of subject matter and school access.

What Is The Covenant Home School Resource Center?

The Covenant Home School Resource Center started as a full Christian school in 1978 but changed to its present configuration in 2001. Even back in its early days the Covenant Home School Resource Center was known for its openness to home schoolers desiring part time supplemental classes. Karen Borg, the director, had been a teacher and principle in the original school and took much of that experience and knowledge into the Covenant Home School Resource Center.

Covenant Home School Resource Center – A Brief History

In early 2000 plans were being laid out to develop the Covenant Home School Resource Center. Over the next year there was much discussion and few meetings and workshops that were scheduled. By the end of the year the Covenant Home School Resource Center had a sizable collection of book, a 1600 square foot building, and lots of faith and dedication.

With this they opened their doors in August of 2001 and prepared to do whatever they could to help the families of today instruct their kids in the Christian way at home. Fast forward a year to April of 2002 and with over 200 members’ families and over seventy children taking classes in everything from science to music the Covenant Home School Resource Center was in full swing.

The library was full with hundreds of text books for the kids to use and additional workshops for all the basic requirements had been set up. By the next year the school had more then doubled in size and by the third year it had reached its peak with close to 200 class members. This did not include the hundreds of children who took advantage of what the Covenant Home School Resource Center and continued their education at home.

Donations of books and other resources flowed in and the school was able to keep up to date and well stocked on all the materials to keep the kids ready and prepared for whatever they needed. As you can see the Covenant Home School Resource Center is a shining example of what is possible when people are dedicated to a cause and work together. From a grass roots movement to a full institution the Covenant Home School Resource Center is there to help families and children a like get the education the want in the way that they want. In this time and age it is important that we instruct our children in what is right, and the Covenant Home School Resource Center is there to support them.

When it comes to home schooling math books you might want to consider a program that builds on teaching concepts and keeps children repeating tasks they have earlier learned. It is easy for children to forget what they have previously learned if it is never again part of their work and tests.

Especially in math, where the concepts really do build on each other, a missing or lost concept will stop your child’s progress. History, while not seeming to be as prevalent in our daily lives, is a very difficult and possibly daunting subject because of its wide spectrum. Choosing the content for your child’s History curriculum can be as difficult as deciding to not use public schools for your child’s general education schooling (K-12).

Many parents have made the decision to home school their children due to the many changes in public school systems have degraded the true history of our nation and that have allowed many important facts to be left out or even changed when it comes to the rich history of America. Choosing the right History curriculum content is critical in providing our children a balanced look at the world and in building the character as they grow in our society.

The History curriculum is a critical subject that its understanding helps our children form a value system based on what our ancestors did and believed in while shaping this country. As in other countries, History is cherished and the factual handing down of this history is what helps out children build character, moral values, decide on career paths and many other critical life decisions. Subjects in the History realm intertwine with all the other core subjects necessary for a well-rounded and complete general education during the K-12 years. Nevertheless, there are simple, but detailed methods in place to help you select the best programs for your children and to enable them to apply the subjects of their History curriculum to the many aspects of adult life after their home schooling program is complete.

Before creating a map of your child’s History curriculum and its content, completing the following tasks will help guide you through the necessary steps in ensuring that you find the best solutions for home schooling.

1. Grade placement – Go to their previous school or have sent to you any lesson plans, course outlines or synopsis of the History curriculum for your child’s last year in a public school. At the very least, ask the teacher to provide you an outline of the subjects covered and how deep they studied the subjects.

2. The home schooling teacher – Determine who the primary teacher will be as they will be central to the home schooling program and in mapping out the History curriculum. They must be one of the decision makers in determining the History content and other subjects they may teach. If the teacher is not a family member, they need to be included in the decisions and this is a good time to lay out your expectations to them. Remember, you are now the principal of the home school!

3. State requirements – Establish the History course requirements of the state Board of Education (BOE) for the grade level of your child. Benefits of Home Schooling

There are benefits for both the child and the parents with home schooling. In recent years, we find that many more parents are choosing to home school because of these benefits.

Firstly, in a very pragmatic since homeschooling is convenient. There is no need to worry how the child will get to and from school, and school activities. Most or all of the schoolwork can be, done at home or online.

This reason alone plays a huge role in the decision to home school a child. Another reason is the fact, it is usually the mother who is at home with the children. The mother or father may need to stay at home because they cannot afford day care or it may be difficult to get the child into the preferred private school.

Home schooling is less expensive than private schools whose tuition can be difficult for some families to pay on hourly wages or a limited salary. The cost of public school activities can add up as well during the school year.

Aside from these pragmatic concerns what is often more important to the parents who choose to home school a child is they are in control of what the child is learning and the pace at which the child learns. Home schooling places the children in their own surroundings and therefore they are more comfortable. The kitchen table with mom or dad cooking, or in there room at a comfortable quiet desk can be the best classroom of all.

This way there are no distractions or disruptions for the child to encounter. The child is better able to concentrate in familiar surroundings. It is reassuring for the parent in knowing that the child is actually learning the proper lessons and values that they want to pass on. The child is thus shielded from potentially negative influences in a school setting where, sadly, we often here in the news tragic instances of bullying, for instance.

If you choose to have a Bible study included into the child’s daily lessons then you are free to do so when you home school a child. Public and private schools do not allow this. They also do not allow a child time to pray before class in the mornings any longer. This is a huge benefit as parents can start their day and the child’s day off right with a pray for strength and knowledge for the day’s studies.

Finally homeschooling can be a very bonding experience for families. Children grow up so quickly and those passing years can’t be recaptured. How much better for parents and children to spend this quality time together towards a greater purpose.

Deciding to home school your child is a wonderful decision and I hope it is not one you took lightly. As a former teacher, I am here to help you move forward in your decision. This three-part article will help you take the necessary steps in creating a learning environment where your child can fully develop at home. I truly believe you, as a parent, can teach your child. Good luck and happy teaching.

Prepare Yourself for Teaching

The very first step is to completely devote yourself to your task to teaching your child each and every day. This will be your job as the teacher of your children. This is your legal responsibility as their guardian. It should not be taken lightly and no one should tell you to do it later. Teachers do this for eight hours for a reason, so should you.

Choose a Teaching Style

Some teachers follow Montessori others follow Waldorf.

You need to decide what you consider a good high, quality education. The very reason you chose to home school was that you wanted your child to get a good education. If you don’t decide how to educate your child, then you will never create a proper learning environment.

Study up on the different home school methods, choose which method fits your teaching style and go from there.

Plan Your Curriculum

Go Local for Support

The Internet is full of local groups of home school parents looking for support groups. These are great places to hook up for field trips, PE, activities and support. When the kids get older, you can do co-op classes, get advice, and even co-teach. They are a very valuable support network you will love to have help you out.

Focus on the Legality of Your Home School

Different states have different laws, so look them up. In many states, it is up to you to follow the structure and if you don’t you could be fined or worse. Make sure you get a copy of the law. (Some states, the school has to provide a copy of the law to you.)

In most cases, the schools wipe their hands clean once you decide to home school. Be very clear, they will have nothing to do with you once you make the decision. They treat it like a dropout.
