British English, American English, the same language?

It ‘was said by Sir George Bernard Shaw, that “England and America are two nations separated by a common language.” The first experience was when I worked at camp two months advisor Summer Camp 2000 is treated like part of the Boy Scouts of America, the largest international exchange program. Before you go, all the participants in the system were given a short list of words that are commonly used in the United Kingdom, the Americans are either confused, or even offends them. I heart the words and thought, “I Will Survive”.

When I finally came to the United States, three months later, I realized that perhaps a lifetime of American television viewing was not adequately prepared to assess and address the differences between American and British speech. In the first hour of their arrival in camp, I was exposed to the high school of American English, American and American Black English spoken by Joe Public, all different, all together. Needless to say, I have to face in the final. The Americans I met were very welcoming and helpful, and I thought they were patient with me when I made a social blunder, when I used an inappropriate word or phrase.

On my return, I wondered if anyone had documented the differences between American and British English. I found several books on the subject, but are often written in a dry and academic. I felt I could do better and use my sense of humor and personal experience to help people on both sides of the Atlantic to communicate more effectively when they meet.

My research on the subject led me to several conclusions.

First of all, American English and British English cover the increase in transatlantic travel and the media. Mobility of slang words is mostly in the east, although some words from Great Britain has approved the Ivy League fraternity. This parallel trend in recent years is the appearance of Hollywood movie making as the dominant center in the world and also in World War II, when large numbers of American soldiers were placed in the United Kingdom. This tendency has been codified in the eve of the TV. Before then, it was thought that American English and British English differ from the two languages ??evolved. In 1789, Noah Webster, whose name American dictionaries are still published to date, said: “The number of local causes, such as a new country, new associations of people, new combinations of ideas, art, and some interaction with the tribes wholly unknown in Europe of new words in American English.

The American discourse tends to be influenced by the overheated language of most media, which is designed to connect a passive impression of exciting activity, if sometimes trivial events. However, interestingly, a very violent activity and life-changing events are hidden in blind shades antiseptic used to hide reality. If it were a country, California would be one with more people than Canada and an economy the size of China. Mr Starr is too good a historian to offer any pat explanation, but instead, it focuses on the extraordinary range of people and events that led to the mythical land of Queen Calafia, through the rule of Spain and Mexico, and management of Arnold Schwarzenegger (what other state in America would have chosen a movie star pumping iron with an Austrian accent?). Moreover, it does so with such elegance and humor that his book is a pleasure to read.

What emerges is not all Californian sunshine and light. Think back to the savage violence that accompanied the gold rush of 1849, or the exclusion orders against the Chinese or the riots that regularly marked industrial and social relations in San Francisco (though dictionaries prefer Bavaria as the origin of “thug”, Mr Starr believes that youth is derived from invading Chinatown with the war cry of “caucus”). California, it must be remembered, was very wild west, having to wait until 1850 before they can make their way to statehood.

So what is tame? Response from Mr. Starr is a combination of great men, great ideas and great projects. The emphasis on infrastructure development in California: the extraordinary system of aqueducts and canals that transferred water from upstate to the arid south, the development of agriculture, pathways rail and road, and perhaps the factor more important to California’s high tech today, creating a superb set of public universities.

All this, he writes, “began with water, the sine qua non of any civilization.” He goes cheerfully to note the “monumental damage to the environment” caused by irrigation projects that were “plagued by claims of deception, deceit and conflict of interest” means a situation that was fodder for Hollywood movies such as Roman Polanski’s “Chinatown.”

A virtue of this book is its structure. Mr. Starr is never trapped in his chronologicalframework. On the other hand, when the subject requires it, can shoot and fly back and forth among the decades (throughout the book is particularly good for regular outbreaks labor unrest, both in the yards or fields of San Francisco’s Central Valley ).
